The Methodical Proofreader

Professional Proofreading Service

About Me

I am a professional, native English freelance proofreader and member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP).

An excellent communicator, I am friendly, reliable and meticulous, with an exceptional eye for detail. I also have an enquiring mind, so you can be sure that I will check and double-check anything that looks out of place, and I will always query with you, the author, anything that I can’t resolve. Knowing when to ‘leave well alone’ and ‘respecting the author’s voice’ are two important criteria to recognise in order to do a good job as a proofreader. I am here to help you produce writing that is as error free as is humanly possible (rarely can we claim absolute perfection!) without interfering with your personal style and content.

Training and Qualifications

I trained with the Publishing Training Centre (PTC) on their Basic Proofreading course, which I passed with Merit. I then went on to further my training through the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP), now the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), on their Proofreading Progress course. I continue to study with the CIEP, whose Code of Practice I follow.

Particular Areas of Knowledge

Hospitality: I have worked on charter superyachts and in Michelin-starred restaurants so I have a good knowledge of food, wine and the hospitality industry.

Performing ArtsI have a diploma in acting from Drama Studio London and I simply love everything to do with theatre and the arts. My professional acting experience includes: Theatre-in-Education, touring productions, London Fringe Theatre, Gilbert and Sullivan (The Players’ Theatre, London) and choral singing with The Royal Choral Society.

Equestrian: I grew up around horses as I was extremely lucky to have friends who owned a competition yard. As well as competing, I also took British Horse Society (BHS) exams in Riding, Knowledge and Care, attaining BHS level 2 qualification.

Yachting: at the age of 30, I stumbled across the world of superyachts while on holiday in Italy. I was drawn to a life of travel and adventure (not to mention extremely long hours and hard work!). After passing the Competent Crew course with the Royal Yachting Association (RYA), armed with my new skills and a wealth of hospitality experience, I took the plunge and booked a one-way ticket to Mallorca to find a job! I was very lucky to find a position as crew on board a classic sailing yacht; I went on to spend ten years working as professional crew on some of the most beautiful sailing yachts in the world.

Travelwhile working on superyachts I was lucky to travel to some of the most fabulous locations in the world: I have cruised the Mediterranean Sea; crossed the Atlantic Ocean; voyaged around the Caribbean; navigated around icebergs in Greenland and sailed along the Suez Canal to explore the beautiful islands of the Seychelles, in the Indian Ocean.

Other Interests

When not proofreading, I enjoy spending time with my husband and our two children; mountain bike riding; going for walks in the countryside; gardening; drawing and painting and, of course, reading.
